50th Annual Steuben Parade School Trip

On September 15th, 2007, the Deutsche Sprachschule made a strong showing at the 50th Annual Steuben Parade in New York City. We departed Winfield School at 10:00 with a bus packed full of revelers. Our turnout this year was at its highest in over 5 years! Upon arrival in New York, we lined up with the New Jersey division, which represents German organizations from throughout the state. As we marched down Park Avenue, thousands of onlookers cheered each passing group. The children waved to the crowds from aboard our beautifully decorated float. The parade was a feast for both the eyes and the ears as colorful costumes and traditional music created a festive atmosphere. After the parade concluded, many of us proceeded to the Yorktown neighborhood for authentic bratwurst and potato pancakes at Schaller and Weber, an iconic German deli in that area. Overall, the parade provided an excellent opportunity for our students to experience German culture firsthand, to put their studies in the classroom into context.

We would like to express our gratitude to all the parents who contributed to making this event such a success. In particular, we would like to thank Nicole Damm for taking charge of signups and decorating the float and Annette Glorius for assisting with decorations and serving as a chaperone for the children. We are already looking forward to next year!

We’ve put up some of the photos we took in our photo gallery. If you have any photos you would like to add to the gallery, contact Stephen Gyarmati, the webmaster, at spg36@drexel.edu.
